Introduction
The traditional Art of Indian Classical Dance is also an important discipline of the faculty which attracts the learners. The Dance Section of the faculty began in 1978 with a batch of Diploma students in Bharat Natyam. Under tutelage of eminent dancer Pt. C.V. Chandrashekhar which fructified in the form of three year diploma course in Kathak and Bharat Natyam in the Faculty of Performing Arts in 1981. Eminent Dancer Shri Prem Chand Hombal a product of Kalashetra became the first teacher followed by the eminent Danseuse Prof. Ranjana Srivastava of Lucknow Gharana to lead and train the students of Kathak. The Dance Section is also having the service of young and energetic danseuse Dr.Vidhi Nagar.
ACADEMIC & RESEARCH PROGRAMME: An invaluable research project on 'Dhrupad Nritya' by Prof. Ranjana Srivastava (Dean) was undertaken and completed. A book Tantra Mantra Yantra in Dance an exposition of Kathak written by Prof. Ranjana Srivastava published in 2004 is an intriguing work on inter-area relationships, in the true spirit of India's unique cultural heritage.
The under Graduate course was first introduced in the year 1999 and the Post Graduate Courses started in the year 2007.The students has to pass University Entrance Test (U.E.T/P.E.T) for these courses respectively. The Department at present offers 2 years M.Mus course, 3 year B.Mus course and 3 year Part time Diploma course in both Kathak and Bhartnatyam.
Eminent scholars and performers are invited regularly for lecture demonstration cum performance. Due to the vigorous efforts of the teachers in a short span of time the Department has produced many outstanding performers. Both the disciplines have trained professional Dance Troupes, which are performing regularly on important concert platforms at the state level.
The Department of Dance has been attracting the attention and admiration of foreigners globally. There are many students from the SAARC countries as well as the European countries.
As a part of the extension activities the Department proposes to start Two Year Post Graduate Diploma in Kathak and Bharatnatyam for Foreign Students and Two year Post Graduate Diploma in Folk Dance/Theater. The Department also proposes to take up Documentation of Folk Literature, Music and Dance as a Major Research activities.
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the department is not only to train students to become good dancers/artists but also to give them a good and strong theoretical knowledge of Indian art and culture.
The students of the Deptt. have excelled within a short period. They received prestigious awards as Shringara Mani, Bombay S.N.A, prizes, Youth Festival & Spandan prizes, MHRD scholarships and many others.
The Deptt. is fully geared with able faculty members who work hard to see that the students develop a holistic personality and pass out as good citizens with a sense of responsibility.
