Introduction
The College of Music and Fine Arts came into being in the year 1950 as a result of the tireless efforts of the visionaries Pt. Govind Malviya and Sangeet Martand "Pt. Omkar Nath Thakur".
The College was accorded the status of the faculty of performing arts in the year 1966 .Ever since it's inception the faculty has made a steady progress. Today the faculty is proud to have four distinct department of Vocal Music, Instrumental Music, Dance, and Musicology.
Mentors: Ever since the inception of the Instrumental Music Department the various courses in different discipline like Sitar, Violin, Flute, Tabla is been offered. Under the Headship of Prof.Lalmani Mishra the Department has flourished since 1958 and after that it has never looked back. Some of the pioneer teachers who were not only good in their subjects but also were reputed and outstanding artists of their own discipline enriched this Department with their knowledge and wisdom. They were Sri.J.C.Choudhury, Prof..K.C.Gangrade, Prof. Rajbhan Singh, Prof.R.D.Chakravarty, Prof. Puspa Basu, Dr.Gopal Shankar Mishra- Sitar, Pt.D.G.Paluskar, Dr.R.B.Sontake, Padmabhushan Prof. N.Rajam, Prof. R. P. Shastri- Violin, Sri C.L. Srivastava-Flute, Sri Ramkrishna Parvatkar , Sri Nageshwar Prasad Mishra ,Pt.Chotelal Mishra Tabla. In 1964 the South Indian Classical Music started with the following subjects-Violin, Veena & Mridangam and the teachers were Sri Venkat Ramanujam - Violin, Sri Subramaniam, Sri.M.V.B.Rao- Veena, Sri T.S Raghavan Iyer, Shri K.V.Krishnan- Mridangam.
Performance Highlights:
The Department regularly invites the renowned Instrumentalists for presenting Lec-Dem for the benefit of students. Currently the Department is also having distinguished teachers who are also good performers of global reputes. Prof. Krishna Chakravarty, is an outstanding Sitarist of International repute. Dr.Birendra Mishra comes from a traditional many of musicians of the Banaras Gharana, Dr.Rajesh Shah, Dr. Sangeeta, Dr.Prem Kishore Mishra ,Ms Supriya Shah - Sitar, Dr.Prahalad Nath- Flute, Dr.V.Balaji, Dr.Swarna Khuntia- Violin, Dr.Praveen Uddhava-Tabla all are reputed performers in their own discipline .The department is also proud to have some reputed Tabla, Harmonium and Sarangi accompanists to its credit.
The Major Objective:-
1-To create Performing Artist, Teachers, and Educators.
2-To Promote research in various aspect of Music and also inter-disciplinary research.
3-To equip students with the right skills in order to find employment opportunities various awareness of sound Engineering, Recording, Editing, Composing, Artist promotion, Music business, Music event management, copyright, Music publication etc. Preservation
4- To promote this great tradition of Classical Music, creating greater Awareness and better sensibilities of the society at large towards Classical Music and to create better employment opportunities for Students.
The Department seeks to achieve these objective through it's highly trained accompanist shed and a very helpful teaching faculty and also by means of offering a wide range of courses that are frequently updated and re-design keeping in mind the changing demands of the job market and also the concert platform and also to equip student to make use of the new opportunities that emerge in this vast field of music.
The Department is proud to have highly qualified teachers who are also excellent performers in their respective fields. The reenter efforts of the faculty members have catapulted the Department of Instrumental Music in to the league of the premiere institution of music in the country. Various courses like Diploma, Undergraduate and Post graduate courses are offered in instruments like Sitar, Violin , Flute and Tabla.
The Department stresses very high stander of excellence and merit as is reflected in it's meticulous and rigorous admission on procedure.
Meritorious students from all across the country and from foreign countries like Sri Lana, Nepal and Korea etc are the part of the Department.
Academic excellence and Research Focus:-
The Department also stresses on the importance of research and research oriented training. Various Research Scholars are doing focused and innovative research in areas like the relevance of Music education in school curriculum.
Various workshops, lecture demonstrations and performances by eminent musicians and educators and musical quizzes and debates for the students are regularly organized to promote better understanding of various aspects of Music and to encourage the inquisitiveness and creativity of Students.
The teachers also use innovative methods like Audio Visual aids. And recordings and editing of music through the computers to improve the teaching learning process. Harmonious interpersonal relationship between the teachers and students and in cultivating the right moral values in the students are also among the ideals of the Department.
