Brief writeup on area of specialization/awards/achievements:

Our current research focuses on two main areas of research

  1. Mapping of gene(s) for rust resistance in pea: Introduction of resistance genes through plant breeding remains an important and effective means of protecting plants from diseases. However, in order to make disease screening more reliable, it is desirable to use molecular markers to identify the resistance genes. We are trying to understand the mechanism of resistance to pea rust. Some of the components for rust resistance have been identified. Currently, we are in the process of mapping the gene (Ruf) using RAPD and ISSR markers in RIL mapping population.
  2. Development of in vitro regeneration, and slow-growth conservation techniques for some important crop plants: Plants have proved to be a treasure-house of biologically active substances. We are developing in vitro propagation protocol for large-scale multiplication of some of the important plant species. For example, tomato (Solanum lycopersicon), and pointed gourd (Trichosanthes dioica), which are important vegetable crops, and provide a variety of biologically active compounds in our diet. Some other plants like, Drumstick (Moringa olifera), Shalparni (Desmodium sp.) are also being studied. We also intend to develop slow-growth techniques, which will help in reducing time and efforts of the researchers for in vitro conservation of these species.
