Brief writeup on area of specialization/awards/achievements: |

Microbial Physiology, Biochemistry & Genetics
My research activities aim at understanding the mechanisms involved in the regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in nitrogen fixing as well as non nitrogen fixing cyanobacteria mediated by global
nitrogen regulator gene ntcA and PII protein under different regime of calcium and iron. Iron is an essential element and its deficiency leads to several unavoidable consequences including membrane damage in
cyanobacteria. Our results proved that NtcA regulates fatty acid desaturation by regulating enzyme fatty acid desaturases in the cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. PCC 7120. Iron deficiency also triggers the siderophore
production in the cyanobacterium Anabaena oryzae which is not only used for the iron uptake but also it can be potentially used in attenuation of cadmium toxicity. Apart from this, my group has also studied the biochemical
and molecular basis of organophosphate pesticide degradation by the cyanobacteria and reported the role of two proteins viz. WP_017310637.1 and WP_017343813.1 in this process. Our research interests also include the exploration
of microbial ecology in paddy fields and recently, we have analyzed the diversity of nitrogen transforming bacterial community of paddy fields using metagenomics and metatranscriptomics approaches. Cyanobacteria produce a variety of secondary metabolites and we have isolated a novel bioactive compound with antibacterial and anticancer properties, chatacterized as 9-Ethyliminomethyl-12-(morpholin - 4 - ylmethoxy) -5, 8, 13, 16tetraazahexacene - 2, 3 dicarboxylic acid (EMTAHDCA). Furthermore, we have also established the systematics of diazotrophic microorganisms with viz. cyanobacterial strains collected from different parts of India and Frankia strains using polyphasic approaches.
