Area of specialization:

Photobiology, Molecular Microbiology, Stress Biology: Cyanobacteria and microalgae are potential candidates for the production of biofuel and other green products. However, successful accomplishment of these goals will require better understanding of these biological factories and their performances under fluctuating environmental conditions. Research activity in my lab is focused at the intersection of basic understanding of damages and mitigation strategies developed by cyanobacteria to cope with different environmental conditions and their biotechnological application. The information obtained from these studies can be further applied to maximize the resource utilization and photosynthetic efficiency to increase the production of valuable products, food and renewable energy. Damages caused by different environmental conditions directly or indirectly affect photosynthetic efficiency, and cell spends copious amount of cellular energy to repair damages which collectively results in lower net productivity or biomass accumulation.
