Area of specialization: |
My primary research interest is to investigate the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms responsible for obesity associated disorders in relation to reproductive abnormalities under pathological conditions. I believe that such an investigation of the relationship between obesity and reproduction will be of significant importance for several reasons: First, obesity play a cardinal role in the development of various reproductive disorders in women such as amenorrhea, anovulation, hyperandrogenism, and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS); secondly, it is evident that obesity may have a profound impact on sex hormone secretion and metabolism; in this regard, changes in androgens levels in females may favor the development of specific associated endocrine disorders. F urthermore, androgens play a pivotal role in the regulation of different body fat distribution according to sex; and androgen changes in obesity may favor the susceptibility to develop type II diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Thus, given the dynamic role of sex hormones in various metabolic abnormalities, I aim to investigate the specific physiological or signaling mechanism(s) linking sex hormones to obesity associated morbidity or metabolic syndrome.
