About Us
The teaching of French started at the Banaras Hindu University in 1948 at
the Department of Foreign Languages. A separate Department was established
in 1982 with the nomenclature of Department of French Studies which aims to equip
the students with the ability to access rich resources in the French
language to gain an appreciative and insightful understanding of the
perspectives of the cultural context of the target language and provide
translation/interpretation from French into English or Hindi with
sophistication and sensitivity. The Department recognizes the study of
French literature as an important intellectual and creative activity and
seeks to realize a national capability in these areas through innovative
courses of studies. After establishment, it was shaped and nurtured by
stalwarts like Prof. Prabhakar Jha who was appointed
Ambassador of Republic of India to Republic of Madagascar and also High
Commissioner of Republic of India to Republic of Fiji by the Government of
India for his outstanding scholarly contribution for the promotion of
French Studies in India and abroad. Its scholastic tradition was further
strengthened by Mrs P.K. Gode, Shri. Hari Narayan Das, Prof. Swapan
Daasmahapatra, Prof. Sushant Kumar Mishra.
The mandate of the Department is to foster an advanced level of language
proficiency, to provide training in a spoken and written skill, to develop
a holistic study of the French language and its culture, involving key
aspects of literature, history & civilization, linguistics, didactics,
francophone literature and to cultivate translation skill from French to
English/Hindi and vice versa.
The faculty is actively involved in research in Comparative Literature and
Translation Studies. It proposes to offer short-term courses in spoken
French, Functional French and Creative Writing with the focus on the fact
that all amenities are easily accessible to students with the availability
of quality courses, innovative pedagogical practices, blended learning
based on the hybrid model, effective evaluation and feedback system,
grievance redressal forums, libraries equipped with online resources and
internet facilities. Conferences, seminars, symposiums, workshops and
lecture series are regularly held in the department to give a sharp edge to
learning and teaching as well as for attaining global recognition.
