Area of specialization/awards/achievements: Population and Evolutionary Genetics |
|
We are working in the area of population and evolutionary genetics using Drosophila as a model organism. To see the level of genetic differentiation among Indian natural populations of D. ananassae by using allozyme markers, we have been able to decipher that natural populations of this species are genetically structured. Correlation between geographical distance and genetic distance was found to be positive and highly significant showing isolation by distance effect. We are also trying to test the effects of genetic variation and abiotic factors on a number of life history traits of Drosophila. Genotype-by-environment interaction plays an important role in maintaining genetic variation and in the evolution of fitness related traits. Diet during ontogenesis is one of the important factors which affect the phenotype at the level of morphology and physiology. Our study to see the effect of dietary perturbation on adult morphological traits in different genotypes of D. ananassae in both the sexes indicate that diet induces plasticity in morphological traits and the induction is highly genotype dependent as well as dependent on the interaction between both of them. |
