Reproductive Biology and Endocrinology: Male Reproductive Biology; Fertility Regulation; & Reproductive Toxicology.
Research interests include male reproductive biology, regulation of male fertility and male reproductive toxicology. One of the major aims of his studies has been to explore the plant sources for a safe, effective and reversible contraceptive for use in human. He evaluated the antifertility effects of indigenous plants and, in particular, the effect of Coccinia indica on the reproductive organs and fertility of Parkes (P) male mice. His studies revealed that suppression of spermatogenesis may be caused by germ cell apoptosis resulting from deficiency of testosterone, which, in turn, may result from the adverse effect of Coccinia on steroidogenesis and oxidative status in the testis. A notable feature of his study is that this approach has no effect on libido. His studies have also shown expressions of Orexin A (OXA), a hypothalamic neuropeptide, and its receptor (OX1R) in the testis of neonatal P mice and that the binding of OXA to OX1R is important for the development of the testis. In addition, his studies for the first time revealed that exposure of BDE-209, a common environmental pollutant, to adult male mice caused reduction in serum levels of thyroid hormones and the altered thyroid status partly resulted into impairment of testicular steroidogenesis because of down-regulated expression of SF-1, which, in turn, led to a decrease in germ cell proliferation and thereby suppression of spermatogenesis..
