Awards and Recognitions to Faculty Members and Alumni


1. Dr. N.H. Samtani, Founder Head of the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies received the Certificate of Honour (President Award) by the President of India in 1999 and Bhasha Sammana (Sahitya Academy Award) in 2005 for his out standing contribution to classical Indian Language and literature through his works in Pali and Buddhist studies.

2. Prof. Bhagchandra Jain (Former Head of the Department of Pali-Prakrit, University of Nagpur) passed his M.A. in 1962 from the Department. He was awarded Commonwealth Scholarship in 1963 to carry out his Ph.D. in Sri Lanka. He received the Certificate of Honour by the President of India in 2004 for his out standing contribution to the classical Indian Languages Pali and Prakrit.

3. Prof. Prem Suman Jain (Emeritus Professor and Director, National Institute of Prakrit Studies and Research, Shravanabelagola, Karnataka) passed his M.A. in Pali in 1966 from the Department. He received the Certificate of Honour by the President of India in 2006 for his out standing contribution to the classical Indian Languages Pali and Prakrit.

4. Prof. Dharmchandra Jain, (Former Head of the Department of Sanskrit, Pali-Prakrit, Kuruksetra University, Kuruksetra), passed his M.A. in Pali in 19. And awarded the degree of Ph.D. in Pali in 1972 from the Department. He received the Certificate of Honour by the President of India in 2009 for his out standing contribution to the classical Indian Languages Pali and Prakrit.

5. Prof. Lalji (Professor of the Department) passed his M.A. in Pali in 1982 and awarded the degree of Ph.D. in Pali 1987 from the Department. He was awarded Sino- Indian Cultural Exchange Fellowship in 1988 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India for two years to study Buddhist texts and Chinese Language at Beijing,China.

6. Prof. Siddharth Singh's Awards/Honours/Fellowships: (Professor of the Department)

(i) Visiting Professor in the Central University ofHyderabad (UoH), Hyderabad during Dec. 2012-Jan.2013.

(ii) Awarded by well-regarded Fulbright Senior Research Fellowship, 2011-12, USA and worked in the University of Colorado, CO, USA.

(iii)Honoured by prestigious Vadrāyana Vyās President Award ,2005 (as a Young Scholar of Pali and Buddhist Studies) of Rupees One Lac, in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan by the then President of India Mr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.

(iv)Selected as only candidate from India among fifteen candidates from the whole world for  The Japan Foundation Fellowship, 2003-04. Worked in the Japan Foundation Kansai Centre, Osaka, Japan on the "Study of Pali Buddhism in Modern Japan" from Oct. 2003 - May 2004 under the supervision of renowned Japanese Buddhist scholar Professor Hojun Nagasaki.

(v) Visiting Professor at Karlstad University, Sweden: (August and September, 2006)

(vi) Visiting Professor a Karlstad University, Sweden: (August and September, 2008)

(vii) Selected as Associate of Indian Institute of Advanced Study Centre, Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla to work during the Years 2009 -2011 for Three months (One month every year).

(viii)Has been Chairperson and Panelist in the various conferences/events held in the countries like USA, Japan, China, Sweden, Thailand, Vietnam, Sri Lanka and Myanmar.

7.Dr. Vishwajit Kumar (Alumnus and presently Associate Professor in Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, Deemed University, Ministry of Culture) honoured by prestigious Vadrayana Vyas President Award, 2004 (as a Young Scholar of Pali and Buddhist Studies) of Rupees One Lac, in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan by the then President of India Mr. A.P.J Abdul Kalam.
