The first batch of MBBS students qualified in the year 1965. It is a matter of great satisfaction that this degree was recognised by British Medical Council even before the Medical Council of India.

In the year 1962, MD and MS courses were started in the Departments of Medicine and Surgery, later this degree course is being conducted in all the departments of Modern Medicine and Ayurveda.

Since the year 1976, post-doctoral DM and MCh courses were introduced after recommendations of the Expert Committees and Board of Studies of each course and with due approval of the Academic Council of Banaras Hindu University. Today DM degree course is available in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Neurology and M.Ch. degree course in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Paediatric Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Urology.

The candidates thus trained in broad and super-specialities are holding high positions with distinctions in Academics, Health Services, Corporate Hospitals or are practicing consultants of repute, both in the country and abroad.

The Institute also provides research facilities for Ph.D. Scholars in the field of Basic and Life Sciences. The research facilities at the Centre of Experimental Medicine and Surgery, Molecular Biology, Department of Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry and such other laboratories have been rated highly in National and International scene. In a survey conducted by British Medical Journal in the year 1993-94, the cumulative research material of this institution was rated as the third best in the country. Some of our institute laboratories have been upgraded as Advanced Centre for research by the University Grants Commission.
