About Us


HISTORY

The  University Mountaineering Centre, Banaras Hindu University was established in the year 1971 by Former Education Minister (Govt. of India) and the then Vice-Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University Late Dr. K.L. Srimali for promoting the Mountaineering & Allied Sports among the youth. Since then this centre has organized more than three dozen adventurous activities including Fourteen Mountaineering Expeditions, climbing a dozen virgin peaks. The Centre is running Two Primary Mountaineering & One Advance Mountaineering courses and has organized International Conference on Mountaineering & Mountain Medicine also published more than a dozen research paper on the same in the National & International Journals. This centre has been visited by First Everester Sir Edmond Hillary, Dr. Harnam Singh, Ex-Director Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Manali (HP), Brig. Gyan Singh, Everester Mrs. Santosh Yadav etc. The main aims of this centre are; 

To acquaint the youth of the periphery with the mountain treasure & hazards, the role of mountains in developing the environments, the love with motherland there by promoting national integration.
 

1.      To inculcate sportsmanship, team spirit, brotherhood and model group behaviour among the trainees.
2.      To organize and promote activities pertaining to mountaineering and adventure sports for the students of the University & other suitable setups in the periphery of the Varanasi.
3.      To promote scientific research in the field of mountaineering & mountain Medicine.
4.      To promote adventurous & social activities by giving suitable programmes for the trainees time to time.

 This centre have been one of the Nodal Centre of University Grant Commission in the year 2001-02 & 2002-03 and conducted successfully the camps for High altitude trekking, Boating & River Crossing, Forrest & Sand Walking, Rock Climbing, Parasailing etc. This year we are submitting the proposals for the following activities in the session 2009-10 for which University is ready.
 

AIMS & OBJECTIVES OF UMC

1. To acquaint the youth of the country with the Mountain treasure, Environment & Cultural Heritage, in order to develop love for mother land.
2. To run the Primary Mountaineering course, Advance Mountaineering course and        Adventure Courses for youth of the Country.
3. To develop personality, Character, Confidence, Decision making, Team Spirit, Sportsmanship, Brotherhood, Model group behavior among the trainees through adventure programs
4. To provide Mountaineering & Allied sports programs to the students & youth of the country from time to time.
5. To promote scientific research in the field of Mountaineering, Mountain medicine & Adventure prospects.
6. To expose the youth to NATURE, HAZARDS, HARDSHIP by providing Adventure Programs to the society in general and student in particulars.
7. To organize Seminars, Conferences, Workshops, Training camps for rescue services & Self defense.
