It is well known that our national language Hindi has been enriched by the contributors from various dialects. Bhojpuri is certainly one of them. It is equally true that only a small part of this rich literary tradition and heritage available in records but majority of these are Still in unwritten form, unrecorded surviving from generation to generation through oral tradition of discourse. Latter is mostly concentrated in village and women are their custodian. Many of the versions of folk traditions depicted in folksongs seem to have been lost if not totally extinct. It is high time that efforts are made to collect the remaining forms and contents of Bhojpuri and preserve them for the posterity in order to know and understand their cultural roots. This dialect is spoken in many other parts of the world like Mauritius, Trinidad and Surinam apart from Bihar, UP in our country. It is important, therefore, to have inputs from all the varied forms of Bhojpuri and record them properly with an annotation and context. This is a primary aim of this centre.
Kashi, the city of light, has always nurtured multicultural, multilingual, multiregional traditions. Remember, this oldest living city of the world survived owing to its pluralistic faith. We have Kabir-Tulsi, Bhartendu- Prasad, Premchand-Ramchand Shukla, Trilochan-Nazir, Bismillah khan-krishan Maharaj and many others who contributed to the sociocultural milieu of this place. The place is known for open discourse and it flourished ideologically owing to its liberal outlook. Despite onslaught of market economy, although, difficult to with stand against the city is still refuse to be swept away by the cultural forces of neo-Liberal economy. The unique position of this centre needs to be established in this sense to address the problems arising out of the slogan survival of the fittest in a market driven economy. It is imperative that this centre on the BHU Campus sets an example in arraigning debate/discussion on various in contemporary issues and identify its role in enriching the cultural heritage of this Region. It proposes to have closer interaction not only with the experts of other dialects but would certainly like to investigate their contributions to many other established language like Hindi and Urdu.
