Vice-Chancellor's remarks in the meeting of Mahamana Heritage Complex
Committee
July 13, 1997 at 6.00 P.M.
19th Century India produced intellectual giants in every field who contributed
to three types of renaissance viz., political, cultural, and literary and
educational.
Banaras Hindu University established during this period of freedom struggle and
ongoing different types of renaissance, represented the unique contributions in
the history of world and particularly of India, Gandhi leading political
liberation (freedom) movement, Tagore leading in the field of culture and
literature and Malaviya in the field of educational re-construction. Of course
several political leaders and builders of modern India were also associated with
these three basic currents. It was on this campus itself where not only
remainants of the foot prints of Gandhi, Tagore and Malaviyaji's could be found
but there are also certain buildings and places where they have stayed during
lifetime of Malaviayji and gave religious, cultural and political lectures to
the members of BHU community and people at large. We, therefore, propose to
perpetuate these cultural heritages as it is and establish the Mahamana Heritage
Complex in the University. It is a happy coincidence that all these places and
building are adjoining Malaviya Bhawan and therefore this Complex can easily be
earmarked for different cultural, educational and religious activities. It is
proposed that Malaviya Bhawan will have a permanent collection of photographs,
paintings, letters, recorded speeches of Pt. Malaviyaji. Similarly, Gandhi
Memorial (freedom house) will have Gandhiji's portrait and other activities
illustrated by photographs and other materials. Similarly, Tagore Memorial will
have Tagore's writings and will offer Ravindra Sangeet in a planned manner. It
may also have a research centre to co-ordinate different cultural and other
activities and make arrangements of sound and light programme connected with
Malaviyaji, Gandhi, Tagore and others. We may also think in terms of having a
reception centre at the main gate where exhibition highlighting University
facets, audio-video presentations on the founder and achievements of BHU etc.
could be gathered.
The Committee may think that how best we can do all this and also how funding
can be mobilized for the purpose.

The Chairman of the Committee Prof. Tripathi in his opening remarks emphasised
to perpetuate the memory of our great founder Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan. He
stressed for need of Malaviyji, his ideology and cosmic vision in a proper
memorabilia. With this end in view the Committee has been constituted consisting
not only members of BHU but also senior citizens of Varanasi. He also added that
we have also to perpetuate the memories of Mahatma Gandhi and Gurudeva Ravindra
Nath Tagore who have blessed this campus and these two with their august
presence have established relationship with this university, which ultimately
blossomed into different phases of the Indian Renaissance of political,
cultural, literary and educational dimensions. During the discussion, Shri R. C.

T. K. Biswas, Prof. Deepak Malik, Shri Radha Ramanji, Prof. S. Rinpoche, Shri A.
S. Sabarwal, Dr. B. S. Mehta, Smt. Leela Sharma, Shri R. S. Dwivedi expressed
their views.
Following points have emerged out of this discussion :
1. The adjacent houses in the vicinity of Malaviya Bhavan be included in the
Malaviya Bhavan Heritage Complex immediately.
2. In one of the houses where Gurudeva Ravindranath Tagore stayed (Dr. Dey's
House) be converted into Tagore's memorabilia with a committee room and the
second house on the right side of the Malaviya Bhavan may be converted into a
guest house and accommodate the present library of Malaviya Bhavan.
3. Sundaram Lodge must also be included in the Complex to perpetuate the memory
of Mahatma Gandhi who was a close associate of Mahamana and visited BHU on
seventeen occasions.
It was pointed out that the present Malaviya Bhavan will have a permanent
gallery of photographs, painting, letters, recorded speeches of Mahamanaji. The
offer was also made to transfer the current gallery of Mahamanaji from Bharat
Kala Bhavan to Malaviya Bhavan. It was also suggested to convert the
present meeting hall into a permanant small auditorium for various religious and
social congregations. For the purpose, a comprehensive plan will be prepared by
the Committee. Gandhi Bhavan will have a gallery of Gandhiji and the illustrious
freedom fighters of India and BHU.
Similarly, Tagore Bhavan will have Tagore writings and will offer Ravindra
Sangeet. This complex will have a Research Centre (Malaviya Centre of Action
Research). In addition, the Heritage Complex will organise cultural and other
activites and make arrangements for sound and light programme, connected with
Malaviyaji, Gandhiji and Gurudeva and other leaders of freedom movement.
4. It was suggested by Hon. Director Prof. R. H. Singh of Malaviya Bhavan to
erect Malaviya Pillar in one of the front lawns of Malaviya Bhavan.
5. The Committee noted that the Executive Council of the BHU has already created
a Publication Cell to publish complete works of Mahamanaji. The Cell should be
revived and the first two or three volumes must be published before 2000 A.D.
6. It was also suggested that a Reception / Information Centre of BHU be set up
at the main gate as an extension of Public Relations which will display various
facets of the University, have permanent arrangement to project the overall
image of the University through Audio Visual means to the vistions
and to provided information to outsiders.
7. The Committee may prepare a master plan for short and long term
implementation agenda. The master plan will be prepared by the Committee with
the help of experts with a specific time frame.
8. It was suggested that the Complex be called as the Mahamana Malaviya Heritage
Complex .
9. Finally, the Committee resolved to authorize the Vice-Chancellor to
constitute various sub-committees to implement the above suggestions and to take
concrete steps to raise funds for the Complex.
While concluding, the Chairman thanked the Vice-Chancellor to constitute various
sub-committees for their valuable suggestions with the hope that we will have a
sense of commitment and fulfillment for completing the project, so that it can
be implemented before the turn of the century.
