Mahamana as a Statesman
As a member of the Indian National Congress in various councils, Malaviyaji supported and pioneered Swadeshi movement in the country. In fact his life style was a testimony of his faith and belief in the swadeshi. Since the age of 16, he never wore foreign clothes. In 1881, he helped in the creation of a Desi Tijarat Company for the promotion of Indian Industries and provided a political and social tone to the Sawdeshi movement. Appealing to people to reject the use of foreign clothes, he said- "It is because of the foreign clothes the foreign rule was established. If you want freedom discard foreign clothes."
वस्त्राहि के कारण बढ़ो इहाँ विदेशी राज।
तजो विदेशी वस्त्र को जो तुम चाहो स्वराज।
Mahamana was of the view that the Swadeshi movement is associated with our cultural identity, individual freedom and economic security. He emphasized need of good governance, "Swadeshi alone will lead to good governance. " He further said that Swadeshi is the basis of the eradication of the poverty in the nation; it is our religious duty to serve the people of the country and that is undoubtedly the duty to the mankind.(Read the full document click here)
