Some of the recent archaeological finds go to establish that architecture had achieved a high degree of skill at Varanasi. Some of the finds of artistic sculpture and stones used in the building of ancient times found of recent excavations are available in the Calcutta Museum. The most interesting of the ruined building of ancient Banaras now existing are those which have been appropriated by the Mohammedans. At the back of the mosque of Aurangzeb, is a fragment of what must have been a very imposing Brahmanical or Jain temple. From the style, it would appear to belong to the time of Akbar, or about the beginning of the sixteenth century. In order to get a more realistic picture of the architectural heritage of the city, a thorough examination QY trained archaeologists of the ruins and fragments of sculpture which are scattered about Banaras and built into modern shrines and temples is necessary.
