Varanasi, in south-eastern Uttar Pradesh, is about 750 km south-east of Delhi, 675 km north-west of Calcutta, 600 km south-east of Agra and 125 km east of Allahabad. Situated on the west bank of the River Ganga, the city gets its name because of its location between Varuna and Asi, two tributaries of the Ganga. It covers an area of about 73.89 sq. km and its altitude is 80.71 m. Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state in India in terms of area and the largest in terms of population. A population of more than 110 million crowds its 2, 94,000 sq. km. of land. Land-locked U.P. shares a common border with Nepal and Tibet in the north, Himachal Pradesh in the north-west, Haryana and Delhi in the west, Rajasthan in the south-west, Madhya Pradesh in the south and Bihar in the east. The Himalayas girdle the north, while the Ganga and the Yamuna flow through the State's south and south-west.
