The 17th century fort here, which was once the home of the Maharaja of Banaras, is now a Museum that offers a trip through the fairy tale world of kings and queens that was. Brocade palanquins and elephant howdahs (saddles) made of silver are among the exhibits. Also on display are swords and guns, a replica of the royal bed, furniture, costumes and other royal trappings. Ramnagar is also famous for its enactment of Ram Leela, the story of Lord Rama which forms part of the celebrations of the Dasara festival in Sep.lOct. Though the Ram Leela is staged at many places in and around Varanasi during Dasara, it is grandest at Ramnagar where it enjoys the patronage of the former Maharaja of Banaras.
