This terraced brick temple is believed to have been built at the exact spot where Buddha met his first five disciples. It is a Gupta construction of 4th to 6th centuries AD. A seated Buddha image and, two exquisitely sculptured bas-reliefs from this temple are exhibited in the Archaeological Museum in Sarnath. Chaukhandi is crowned by a Mughal-style octagonal tower built by Govarthan - the son of Raja Todar Mal- in 1588 to commemorate Humayun's visit to the city.
